When a violent altercation occurs, the police show up after it's over, especially at private locations like our homes. They are not around to defend us. We must be able to decisively take action.
But we must do it right. Mistakes can land us in jail even if we are completely justified in our actions.
If you carry a firearm or some other defensive tool, training is extremely important. Effective training and practice can make the difference of whether you and your loved ones survive.
Good firearms proficiency is more than knowing how to shoot. It's knowing how to handle your firearm safely, dealing with stress, knowing the laws regarding use of force, and much more. Being truly prepared requires a personal commitment toward continued practice.
That same level of commitment is needed even for non-lethal protection options. Training and ongoing practice are crucial to our capability to defend ourselves.
Learn to be prepared, not paranoid. Learn not only to be a survivor, but to be a defender. I train defenders.
* Most of my firearms training is privately scheduled, either with individuals or small groups.
* I seldom have pre-scheduled courses. Most people I work with prefer individual or tailored instruction. Please contact me directly to arrange personalized training
* NRA courses are scheduled well in advance for those who like that format. For a complete list of locally available NRA courses, please visit www.nrainstructors.org.
In addition to NRA courses, I have developed a series of classes ranging from beginning handgun to tactical defensive handgun and tactical shotgun. Some courses are not listed but are available. Just ask if you have a particular interest. These structured outlines were developed based my own law enforcement training, and from working with ex-military personnel, active duty and former law enforcement officers, and other concerned citizens.
Everyone begins their firearms journey with no prior experience. I have trained many people who are beginners, some of whom had never previously fired a handgun. Personal training provides a no-pressure way to learn safety practices, and to gain proficiency and confidence more quickly than in a structured class.
Experienced shooters often have particular skills or situations they want to learn or improve on. Examples include night shooting, advanced defensive skills, and weapon retention. Customized classes can be designed to meet these specific needs.
Not everyone should carry a firearm. There are serious mental, emotional, legal, financial and continuous training commitments involved. I respect the courage of those who can acknowledge their apprehension to carry a firearm. Even if you do carry a firearm, having non-lethal options is smart for several reasons. These can level the playing field against a potential attacker. But as with firearms, training and practice are necessary if we expect to be able to effectively defend ourselves in the event of a sudden, potentially violent altercation.
Avoiding conflict is always better than engaging in it, if at all possible. Surprisingly to many people, self-protection can be effective with the knowledgeable use of everyday items. Powerful flashlights and whistles are great examples. It seems like it would be obvious how to use them, but when an altercation is imminent, an untrained individual will be no better off than to not have these items at all. Training and practice are critically important.
Our world is becoming more violent by the day. Criminals are becoming more agressive for a variety of reasons. They look for easy targets - people who appear to be unaware and unable to defend themselves. Awareness of the threats around us must be a priority. We must also consider what characteristics we have that might make us an attractive target. Societal trends make people more vulnerable. We must think a little differently if we want potential attackers to see us as undesirable targets. This takes commitment and practice.
